Baylor’s Stunning Success Shows We Have Found A Unique Niche

We, the students, have been doing some number-crunching. And we found something so amazing that we just had to say something about it! Baylor's success over the past few years in attracting better and brighter students is nothing short of stunning. Just consider the following facts and statistics:

By 2004, Baylor’s ambitious Vision 2012 had become well-known across the state (not to mention the nation) and had begun to gain the notoriety it deserves. And this notoriety was reflected in the figures. In the fall of 2004, the University saw a dramatic and unprecendented 2,000+ jump in the number of freshman applications. That same year, Baylor’s acceptance rate, after hovering around 80% for the past three years, dropped an equally dramatic 9.5 percentage points to 72.4%. Baylor had become significantly more selective and thus able to accept better and brighter applicants.

But this was only a foretaste of things to come. Baylor’s reputation as a university where academic excellence is combined with a robust commitment to Christian faith continued to grow. And more and more students--more of us--decided Baylor was the ideal place to study, live, learn, and grow. By the spring of 2005, it had become apparent that Baylor was going to have yet another record-setting freshman class. But no one had any idea of what actually lay in store. By the time summer rolled around, Baylor officials had to cap enrollment when they realized that the number of entering freshman was rising well beyond the 2,800 they had initially planned for. Officials had to schedule many, many more orientation sessions and begin offering incentives to upperclassmen to move to off-campus housing to make room for the record freshman class.

As it turns out, the number of applications for fall 2005 saw a stunning 4,500+ jump over and above even the previous year's record! When it was all said and done, Baylor received a whopping 15,485 freshman applications for the fall semester--nearly double what it was only two years before! Again, equally dramatic, was the concomitant drop in Baylor's acceptance rate to 65.7%! This rate had dropped an astonishing 16.2% in only two years! Moreover, Baylor's entering classes of 2004 and 2005 have been both the best (with record-setting SAT scores of 1190 and 1196, respectively) and the most diverse (with minorities constituting 30.3% and 30.6%, respectively). Don't believe us? Check out Baylor's annual press release regarding these matters dated Semptember 8th, 2005.

We wonder why no one else is trumpeting these incredible statistics! (Come on, administration! This is something to be very, very proud of!) These are truly stunning numbers. Indeed, what can account for such mind-boggling improvement? We submit that the Vision of fostering academic excellence and serious Christian commitment was absolutely key. Indeed, we should know, for we are the very students whom these statistics describe!!! We were attracted here by Vision 2012; it is, without doubt, the most prominent reason why we all chose to call Baylor our "alma mater."
